I chose to study the Bachelor of Business Systems due to its broad core subject offering. The course covers all aspects of IT which will allow me to specialise in any particular focused area later on in my career. The Industry-Based Learning program (IBL) was another major attraction. Having now completed both industry placements at two large corporations, I am able now to put theory into real life practice.
The course is sponsored by industry partner companies where we complete our IBL placements. Each year reviews are made by a steering committee made up of these industry partners, current students and faculty staff. This ensures that the course remains as relevant to the current workplace as possible.
I found the sponsor companies for the Monash IBL program, to be larger and more well-known, compared to those that other institutions offer as part of their IBL programs. This meant that the work I was engaged in whilst on placements was more applicable to the larger IT field.
The industry based learning placements definitely assist in putting you above graduates from other institutions as you already have a whole year of hands on experience in the field of IT. I found the placement to be very rewarding and it has helped me put into perspective just how relevant the subjects are, within my degree. It also allowed me to become accustomed to the corporate culture within a large organisation, and I believe that once I graduate I will have no problems settling into a job.
The combination of core subjects from both the faculties of Business and Economics, and Information Technology, was another factor in my decision to take this course. In the future I would like to secure a combined business/technical role within a large corporation which has a set graduate scheme. This means a system of rotations within specific departments, which would give me a good basis for my future career.
I would advise future students to seriously consider all the courses that Monash has to offer within IT. Whether you prefer a straight Computer Science degree or a Business Information Systems degree, Monash has some of the best facilities available to students to enable you to achieve your goals and enjoy your time at university.
