Recruiting: The majority of IBL graduates are recruited by industry partners. Industry Based Learning graduates are in high demand given the calibre of the students attracted to the degree, the combination of business and IT skills they develop. An exclusive recruitment meeting is organised between the program partners and the graduating IBL students in March each year.
Cost effective resource: students are typically assigned graduate level work during their placements. The contribution of $36,000 per annum plus GST supports a graduate position that is filled by a stream of bright, enthusiastic students with fresh ideas and new perspectives for 44 weeks each year.
Collaboration: By collaborating with a high profile university, partners have the opportunity to stay in touch with current trends in IT education and to influence the future direction of that education.
Marketing: partners of the program are given a considerable amount of publicity in secondary schools through the Monash Open Day, information sessions and direct marketing to secondary schools.
Networking: the program provides partners representatives with a range of opportunities to network and develop business links.
Partners provide at least one placement each half year while some organisations host multiple placements each half year.
Partners provide students on placement with an industry experience that is interesting and challenging.
Partners assign a supervisor/mentor for the student for the duration of the placement.
Supervisors evaluate students twice during the placements (similar to staff appraisals).
Partners represent their organisations on the steering and curriculum committees of the program.
Partners are not required to sign a contract or make a long-term commitment to the program nor are they under any obligation to offer employment to students.
Partners pay contributions to Monash within six weeks of the start of each placement.
Partner contributions are made to the Faculty of Information Technology as an education grant and there is no payroll, work cover or insurance implications for the partnering organisations. IBL students are fully insured through Monash University. Being an education grant, the contribution and GST component is fully deductible.
