IT Challenge 2009

The IT Challenge is a multiple category competition for High School Students and celebrated in a final IT Challenge awards night at the International Digital Entertainment Festvial (Melbourne) in October 2009.

The IT Challenge categories will cover the following areas -

Competition specifications

Who?
All Secondary Schools in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania are eligible for entry. Schools from other Australian states please contact us before submitting an entry. The competition is directed at students studying in Year 10, 11 and 12, however there is no restraint in age so long as all students are enrolled at a Secondary College (High School). If you attend TAFE please contact us before submission.
Entries can be team based or individual: Maximum team size of 4 students.

International entries - For schools outside of Australia, please contact us before submitting an entry. International entries are judged separately from the domestic competition for 2009.

When?
Final Submission date: 25th August 2009.

Categories

Programming
Students are required to design and program a project using Visual Basic.
Possible project ideas - Interactive booking system, Calculator or Multimedia product.

Database
Students are required to develop an interactive database using various software applications (e.g. visual basic).

Game Development
Design and build a Computer game. The delivery and use of program languages are open. Points will be rewarded for ability and presentation.

Web Design
Design and develop an interactive website. The site must include rollovers, animations and have at least (minimum) eight pages. Points will be rewarded for advance web techniques and originality.

Film
Students are required to develop a short film or documentary (maximum 3 minutes in duration). The theme and delivery must be positive.

Digital Imaging
Create an image, poster or design using Photoshop or Illustrator software.

Machinima
Make a machinima movie using characters from computer games. Create a short movie.

Open IT Category
The Open IT Category is related to areas that are not defined in this competition. Before entering this category a High School must give good reason why the entry should be accepted for judging.

Register your entry

Please send an email to Andrew Owen if you are entering the competition. Please include if it is an individual or team based entry, name of teacher, year level and school. This will help us better administer your entry near the submission dead line.

Deliverable

Both authoring files and final delivery file should be supplied on a DVD R as final submission. Video clips can also be sent in on mini DV tape. All submissions should be named accordingly with participant and school information on the official entry form. Also required is a one page document describing how your entry was made and why. All entries are required to submit a digital screen shot of your entry.

Judging Process

The judging of the competition will be undertaken by Staff within the Faculty of Information Technology Monash University and members of the IT Industry. All entries results will be published on the Faculty of Information Technology website www.infotech.monash.edu.au after the IT Challenge Awards Night.

Prizes

Winning students will be awarded prizes and trophies for placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each IT category and to the winning high schools.

Prizes will also be presented to the winning schools. Schools will receive passes to IDEF.

Awards of Merit will also be presented to various students showing outstanding achievement (who have not placed in the top three).

All winning entries will be presented and receive prizes at the IT Challenge awards night. Award winners and schools will be notified in advance before the event.

IT Challenge Student of the Year

The IT Challenge Student of the Year will be selected from the 1st placed winners in each category. Three will be selected for 1st, 2nd and 3rd IT Challenge student of the year. This award will be announced on the night.

IT Challenge Awards Night

The IT Challenge Awards Night will be held at the International Digital Entertainment Festival (Melbourne), Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne Australia.

Time: 7pm - Start 7:45pm
Location: Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne, Australia

The event will include awards ceremony for IT Challenge and 2009 Game Camp Team winners.

Our Role

Despite running the competition, The Faculty of Information Technology will only take an administrative role. No technical or software support will be offered by the Faculty and it is expected that students will use their own research methods to locate support materials for any software or technical issues that may arise.
