Guidelines for minor thesis

  1. The minor thesis option is only available for Masters degree students.
  2. It is a prerequisite that an average of Distinction or higher is achieved before a student is eligible to do minor thesis.
  3. The students are generally advised to select the project subject FIT5008 plus two other subjects unless you have a very strong case in research for the selection of the minor thesis. You cannot do both the thesis and FIT5008.
  4. The minor thesis is counted as 24 points towards your degree. It should not be viewed as an easier alternative to other subjects and the project FIT5008. It consists of twice as much work as the project subject FIT5008.
  5. In any case, you should start a minor thesis only if you have completed all other subjects in your degree (or very close).
  6. If you decide to pursue the minor thesis option, you need to talk with a potential supervisor first. The topic, amount of work and due date for the thesis submission should be agreed between you and your supervisor before the thesis is enrolled and the work started.
  7. The minor thesis will be independently examined (not by your supervisor) after submission. This may lead to some delay in getting result.
  8. It is essential that students intending to start a minor thesis, complete FIT4005 IT Research Methods prior to or in conjunction with their initial minor thesis enrolment.
  9. The minor thesis consists of 24 points which can be made up of FIT5014, a 24 point unit taken over a single semester or by taking the minor thesis over more than one semester by enrolling in units that collectively comprise 24 points with FIT5016 (6 points), FIT5017 (12 points) and FIT5018 (18 points).
